Accounting software 'going down SOA route'

Accounting software is moving to service oriented architecture (SOA), according to an industry observer.
Nigel Rayner, research vice-president at analyst firm Gartner, told Computer Weekly about a new breed of
accounting software that aims to combine the benefits of finance software that is both desktop and web-based.
He said that suppliers of
accounting software are increasingly looking at SOA options, with some also offering finance software as a web-managed service.
However, Mr Rayner noted that take-up has been slow so far, with concerns over security and integration the main reason for firms' reluctance to adopt such technology.
He told Computer Weekly that the challenge to small and medium-sized enterprises in particular is that they do not need to rely on web-based systems for their
accounting or general financial system needs.
Because smaller firms can use a local area network, they do not need web-based
accounting software, Mr Rayner suggested.
Last month, Personal Computer World suggested small firms should discuss their
accounting software options with their accountant, in particular to facilitate the exchange of data for annual returns.
