An accounting qualification can now be achieved by schoolchildren as young as 14, with the launch of an NVQ Level two in the subject.

The qualification, which is being launched by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), will be roughly equivalent to two GCSEs and available through schools to young people aged between 14 and 19.

AAT's chief executive Jane Scott Paul told Accountancy Magazine: "We campaign consistently for greater recognition of the importance and value of vocational education provision for 14 to 19 year-olds.

"AAT in Schools offers younger learners access to a range of career opportunities since accountants are needed in all sectors of the economy."

The announcement follows a successful pilot scheme and marks the recognition of the award as being a mainstream vocational alternative.

Clare Morley, Director of Education at the AAT, said earlier that such vocational qualifications were "vital to the economy", providing students with practical skills which would appeal to employers.

According to the AAT, the NVQ Level two is the first part of an accounting Level four qualification which provides an alternative to a university degree.
