The accounting industry is playing an integral role in the success of business, it has been claimed.

Speaking at the City of London Pan-Accountancy Professional luncheon, Richard Dyson, president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), said that the City and the accountancy profession are "inextricably linked".

Arguing that accountants do "more than audit", Mr Dyson claimed that the sector challenges individuals and organisations, while also helping to "create and sustain prosperity".

"We're also about people - about providing careers that are intellectually challenging and fulfilling," Mr Dyson said.

Being able to attract talented individuals to the sector is crucial to the profession's future, he added.

The ICAEW claims to be the largest European professional accountancy body, boasting more than 128,000 members.

The organisation recently stated that the average salary of an associate chartered accountant working in business is approximately £80,000.
