Accounting firms 'may check employee credit history'

Accountancy graduates should be aware that their credit history may influence the decisions of future employers, it has been claimed.

Credit checking firm Equifax reports that as the trend of inspecting applicant credit history increases in general, it is especially appropriate for prospective financial employers to utilise the reports.

The company estimates that students entering university this year will accumulate around £30,000 of debt by 2010 and recommends that all graduates obtain a copy of their credit history.

"I think there's a growing awareness of it now," commented Neil Munroe, external affairs director at the firm. "People who come out of university will need credit to develop their lifestyles, while their incomes grow. So it's important that they do [check their history]."

The National Statistics' Economic and Labour Market Review recently revealed that the financial services industry experienced higher levels of growth over the last ten years than any other UK business sector.
