Most accountants in the UK are not promoting their websites, according to a new study.
The Independent Association of Accountants Information Technology Consultants (IAAITC) found that 10.8 per cent of British accountants actively promote their online portals and 14.3 per cent are able to receive emails from potential clients.
While some firms were shown to have email addresses, almost a third used free or unregistered domains, opting for providers including hotmail and aol.
Of those which do have a company website, a number failed to update their content on a regular basis.
Dave Reynolds, IAAITC chairman, said: "If an accountancy firm itself is not embracing, experiencing and using the technology, how can it possibly claim to be a business advisor to its business clients?"
He added that there was a "worrying gulf" between the uptake of the internet among clients of small and medium-sized businesses and the unenthusiastic approach taken by the accountancy profession.
According to portal maker CPA Web Design, accountancy websites should have several parts, each of which should create a different effect.
