Accountancy bodies across the world have seen a steady increase in the number of students they take on, a report has shown.

In the UK, the most significant increase in pupils has been among female students, with the proportion rising to 30 per cent between 2001 and 2006, according to the Professional Oversight Board's report entitled Key Facts and Trends in the Accountancy Profession.

Meanwhile, the general trend shows that worldwide student uptake is higher than the general rate of membership take-up, which stands at an average of 2.6 per cent per year in the UK compared with the global figure of 5.5 per cent in the global number of students.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales was found to be the accountancy body with the most members between 2001 and 2006, followed by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Paul George, the board's director, said: "This report illustrates the continued strength of the UK accounting profession and its growth reflects the attractiveness of the profession to new recruits both in the UK and internationally."
