The accountancy sector is increasing its intake of graduates in response to higher numbers of people battling it out for a limited amount of jobs, figures have indicated.
Each job within the industry is now fought for by three individuals, with 265,000 graduates expected to be scrabbling for 95,000 specific positions this summer, a survey from High Flyers has suggested.
In response to the shortage of jobs, the accountancy and finance profession plans to increase its recruitment by 5.7 per cent this year, the survey shows.
Martin Birchall, managing director of High Flyers, said: "It's great news that recruiters are stepping up their graduate programmes in 2007, but competition for places on the most prestigious schemes is likely to be tougher than ever with around 50 applicants per place."
He added that despite employers recently increasing their graduate programmes, they have failed to keep pace with the rising number of graduates who will be seeking work after attending university.
According to the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, around eight per cent of all graduate jobs are in the accountancy industry, with the key recruiters being the Big Four companies.
