Most accountancy firms are not promoting their business on the internet, according to new research.
A survey by the Independent Association of Accountants Information Technology Consultants (IAAITC) found that nine out of ten firms did not promote their websites.
Meanwhile, 86 per cent of firms were found to not accept email enquiries from prospective clients.
In response to the figures, Laurence Pyzer of Relate Software said that accountancy businesses needed to have "top-rate" websites.
"They should be using the internet to provide online services to their clients and thereby provide encouragement to clients to do the same for their customers," he told Accountancy Age.
"They should be registering proper domains for their email servers and providing their clients with secure access to their own data."
Dave Reynolds, chief executive of the IAAITC, added that if was "difficult to understand" how professional accountants could try and position themselves as business advisers if they ignored the internet.
