Updating IT security and
accounting software regularly is key to avoiding data theft, experts have claimed.
A recent survey by computer support firm Ulysses has found almost one in two accountancy staff risk having confidential information stolen, mainly through using out-of-date browsers.
Of those polled by the company, 45 per cent admitted they rarely download or install new security measures when they are released.
Peter Turner, technical director at Ulysses, warned the effects can be devastating on members of the accountancy and business community.
He said: "If you don't keep your computer up-to-date it is easier for a piece of malicious software, known as malware, to install itself and transfer data from your computer over the web."
Mr Turner added it is up to managers to "stay aware" of these developments and "take time to protect their company".
In related news, research from Gartner has suggested that as finance and
accounting functions become more popular, chief financial officers must learn to integrate the role of IT more effectively.
