Accountancy is the number one degree demanded by employers, it has been reported.
The US National Association of Colleges and Employers' 2008 job forecast has stated that despite a looming recession,
accounting firms are the one sector which has no plans to cut back on recruitment.
Reported in Accountancy Age, the study claims that accountancy companies are planning to maintain current levels or increase their uptake of new employees during 2008.
"It's not the case that as the economy goes down, the demand for accountants goes down," commented Ira Solomon, head of the accountancy department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
He explained that often the practice of hiring accountants works counter-cycle to the economy.
Undergraduates and graduates have increased their enrolment on
accounting courses by 27 per cent since 2006, the report found.
The news comes as credit checking firm Equifax are advising graduates to obtain a copy of their credit report.
According to the firm, financial employers in particular are increasingly requesting credit statements as part of the application process.
