The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)has criticised the Business Link service, claiming that it is failing to provide support to small companies.

Responding to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform's efforts to simplify business support, Professor Robin Jarvis, head of the ACCA's small business unit, said that awareness of the service's work is low, the Birmingham Post reports.

Describing the support structure for small to medium-sized enterprises as "complex and schizophrenic", Professor Jarvis, claimed the system is failing to provide small businesses with the support they require.

"As the simplification programme develops, ACCA wants the Government to analyse carefully whether Business Link should continue to offer such specialist services which are currently more effectively provided by the private sector," he commented.

Business Link claims to offer practical advice to businesses across a range of topics, including IT, taxes, returns and payroll, and health and safety.
