Companies need to start thinking about their environmental obligations sooner rather than later, according to the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
The organisation which recently published its agenda for sustainability and
corporate social responsibility, entitled Going Concern?, claims there is no time to delay.
Commenting on ACCA's report, chief executive Allen Blweitt said: "Our commitment to the sustainability agenda sets a benchmark to which all professional bodies and associations should aspire."
He added, although economic times were hard, companies should strive to reduce their
carbon footprints.
Carbonaccounting software can give firms a competitive edge as they attempt to work in more environmentally-friendly ways.
Going Concern? suggests a number of green measures for government, business and the accountancy profession to investigate.
It also states regulation should be fair and proportionate so that it does not prevent anyone from competing commercially.
Elsewhere, the Institute of Directors has called on the government to help small businesses that are looking at ways to improve their green credentials.
