The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has grown to become the biggest accountancy body in 47 countries, reports have claimed.

Citing the organisation's annual review, Accountancy magazine claims that the ACCA's student numbers increased by 14 per cent in 2006 to 296,056.

Membership across the board rose by five per cent to 115,345, with the fastest-growing areas being Africa and South East Asia. Especially high student membership increases were seen in central and eastern Europe.

The ACCA's chief executive Allan Blewitt said: "Extending our global reputation through partnerships has been a particular success in 2006. We now work with over 50 accountancy bodies around the world."

He added that the ACCA's qualifications were now taken in 140 countries, where they were all sat in the same way and under the same syllabus.

The largest markets for ACCA members were found to be Australia, Canada and mainland China, with Cyprus, the Czech Republic and Ghana not far behind.
