Pay reviews are the main cause of office conflict, according to 51 per cent of finance workers and accountants surveyed by a recruitment firm.
Robert Half International recently conducted its global Financial Directions Survey and found that more than 50 per cent of Britons and 48 per cent of Irish financiers said the reviews caused a clash between employees and their boss.
In contrast, the figures for other parts of Europe such as The Netherlands and Belgium were comparatively lower, at 19 per cent and 21 per cent respectively.
Ian Graves, managing director continental Europe at Robert Half International, said: "Issues over pay and career progression are clearly a cause of stress for finance professionals.
"Managers need to take a consultative approach and communicate openly with employees about performance and expectations. Employers should aim to work with their staff to set clear goals and objectives and avoid dispute at review time."
Mr Graves added that European businesses were becoming more aware of concerns employees may have and offering benefits which satisfy their worries.
According to the company, the average salary of an accountant was £46,280 last autumn.
