'Save energy by switching off the PC'

Company employees who work on computers are being urged to turn their PCs off before they head home from work in a bid to help the environment.

Green charity Global Action Plan is calling upon workers to save energy and reduce their carbon footprints.

"Staff need to be aware of the energy their IT equipment consumes and the combined impact of everyone turning things off," the charity's environment champions programme manager Chris Large told IT Week.

The expert added that one person could save 1 kWh overnight by turning off their computer, while 1,000 people could save 180 tonnes of CO2 per year if they did the same.

Yesterday, citizens and businesses across the globe marked World Environment Day to raise awareness of protecting the eco-system.

Climate change and environment minister Ian Pearson called upon Britons to identify one change they could make to their daily lives to help combat climate change.
