carbon footprints.

UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon told diplomats at a breakfast seminar in Seoul last week that bosses must prioritise social responsibility and start doing more to tackle environmental issues, reports Bloomberg.

He said: "Taking steps to address climate change, uphold workforce standards, or achieve higher levels of corporate accountability is not just about the financial success of companies or rewards from the market. It is also about building a better future for our children, our country and our planet."

Companies hoping to implement his advice could install carbonaccounting software to identify potential savings.

Ban Ki-moon will meet with G8 leaders in Japan this week to discuss climate change targets further.

His call echoes that of Keith Clarke, chief executive of consulting engineers Atkins, who last week told the Guardian that firms in the UK should take "concrete steps" to substantially reduce their carbon footprints." /> 'More effort needed to deflect initiatives'

'More effort needed to deflect initiatives'

Organisations should put more of a joint effort into trying to reduce the amount of initiatives which affect the accountancy industry, an expert has suggested.

The recommendation was made by Richard Dyson, president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, in a speech at the institute's annual dinner, Accountancy Age reports.

In addition, the president went on to say that the profession should consider what impact more rules would have on the industry, stating that the institute was currently reviewing 38 consultation documents.

"Is the sheer weight of such initiatives disproportionate to the perceived issues they are attempting to tackle? Are they creating unnecessary complexity for accountants? And as a result, are they confusing the very businesses and individuals we all seek to serve?" he questioned.

Mr Dyson recently stated that the audit industry should protect itself against overregulation with a new framework as the profession could lose its attractiveness with harsher rules.
