More could be done to reduce the
carbon emissions measurement of homes in the UK,
according to the chairman of the Construction Products Association
(CPA).
Adrian Barden, writing in Construction News, explained that the
government's
Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) policy
is "far too restricted in scope".
The CPA has written to the chancellor and discussed with housing
minister Margaret Beckett on ways of making the country's houses
have a lower
carbon emissions measurement.
These included replacing old heating systems which are no longer
efficient and replacing windows with double glazing.
Mr Barden said: "The Government has been decisive in its steps to
save the banks.
"The time has now come for an equally decisive decision on how we
improve our existing housing stock."
He also urged the government to provide funds through the
newly-formed Homes and Communities Agency to start off housing
projects which will "help maintain a modicum of house building in
this country".
