'Make Irish tax reclaim forms easier'

News Article - 10 August 2007
Category:

Irish tax reclaim forms should be made easier to understand to save workers paying more tax than they need to, it has been claimed.

The Irish Taxation Institute (ITI) has made the calls following figures which showed that revenue commissioners had to pay £330 million back to workers who had been taxed too much, reports Accountancy Age.

Some 667,957 pay-as-you-earn workers were reimbursed after overpaying on their taxes, with some claims stretching back to four years ago.

According to the website, a study conducted earlier by the ITI found that half of the country's taxpayers were confused about the system and felt that they did not receive the correct amount of tax relief.

Citizens Advice states that tax can be overpaid for a variety of reasons, such as HM Revenue & Customs making an incorrect assessment of a person's situation or sending the wrong tax code to an employer.
